Robert Anderson DuPree

Lyrics by V.J.Pacilio 1975

A guy I went to school with back in upper state New York
By the name of Robert Anderson DuPree,
Decided when he graduated from the local high
That he’d be going to the University.
So he packed up his belongings in an antiquated trunk
And he headed for the college on the hill.
And as Bob headed out that day, he paused just long enough to say
“I’ll be the one to make it big, if anybody will.”

(chorus) Good ole Robert….Anderson DuPree
Always tryin’ to be the captain of the ship.
Poor ole Robert – brother can’t you see,
All the world around you thinks… you’re just a drip!

The next thing anybody heard about ole Robert D
He was making quite a name among his mates.
It seems he got his name into the ‘Guiness Book of Records’
Going backwards fifty miles on roller skates!
Then he tried out for the football team; went to see the coach
Saying “I may not be humble, but I’m great.”
But, when some of us who lived in town went up to see a game, we found
Ole Robert taking tickets at the gate!

(chorus) Good ole Robert….Anderson DuPree
Always tryin to be the captain of the ship.
Poor ole Robert – can’t you really see,
All your mates around you think… you’re such a dip!

When he finally graduated from the University
Bob went off to see the world – to pay his due.
As his ship pulled out of port, he said, (to no one in particular),
“I’ll defend America for you”
After three years on the water, with the North Atlantic Fleet
Bob came proudly sailing home again, at last.
Although he was three years older, those two stripes upon his shoulder
Meant that he was still a seaman,… second class!

(chorus) Good ole Robert…Anderson DuPree
There can only be one captain on each ship.
Poor ole Robert – brother can’t you see,
On the radar screen of life… you’re just a blip!

It’s been about some twenty years since Bob came sailing home
To become a teacher at the local High.
Last month they made him Principal, but just 2 weeks ago,
They condemned the school – sentenced it to die!
Well, it seems a bit ironic, but I guess it goes to prove,
That “poetic justice” triumphs in the end.
You just knew it had to happen – Bob would someday be the captain
Of a ‘ship’ that never was to sail again.
The news came on the radio about an hour ago
‘bout the ‘incident’ down at the local High
The cranes and booms were all in place to start the demolition,
But the Principal had locked himself inside.
So, a rescue team of firemen, they busted down the door,
And dragged him out ‘a screamin’ like a fool.
And as they led ole Bob away, he pause just long enough to say
“I feel it is my duty here, to go down with my school”

(chorus) Poor ole Robert…Anderson DuPree….
Always tryin’ to be the captain of the ship
Good ole Robert….can’t you finally see….
The world, in general, thinks………
