Don Newcombe (1956 – Topps #235)

Donald ‘Newk’ Newcombe was a Pitcher for the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers (1949 – ’51 and, after 2 years in the military during the Korean War, 1954 – 58), the Cincinnati Reds (1958 – ’60), then traded to the Cleveland Indians in 1960 where he finished his 11-year Major League career. With the Dodgers, he was an All-Star 4 times and was a member of a World Series Championship Team in 1955. In 1956, he was the N.L.’s MVP and won the first-ever Cy Young Award, given to the best pitcher in either league, becoming the first Pitcher to win both in the same year. He also was the first man to win the N.L. Rookie of the Year Award (1949), the Cy Young Award and MVP Award during his career (Justin Verlander of the Detroit Tigers is the only other Pitcher ever to do so). Don Newcombe amassed 149 wins and 136 complete games in his career. He also was a better than average hitter, batting ,271, and often being used as a Pinch Hitter.

    This pitcher, Don Newcombe was one of the greatest pitchers of all time! He was everything a great MLB player could be! I remember him well as I was playing Lil League and every time he started, I could not wait to see the final score. He was one of a kind! In that “other” generation. A great one! None any better. Few as good as!
