Bill Russell (2013 – Prizm #260)

William Felton “Bill” Russell was a 2-time All-American at San Francisco U.  He led the Dons to 2 NCAA Championships before being drafted, 2nd overall, by St. Louis and was then traded to the Boston Celtics for Center Ed Macauley. Bill played for “Red” Aurback’s Celtics for 14 years, (1956 – ’69) the last 4 (1966 – ’69) as Player/Coach when “Red” retired. He was an NBA Champion 11 times in his 14 years (8 consecutive) with Boston, and was the Captain of the 1956 Olympic Team, which won a Gold Medal in Melbourne.He was a 5-time League MVP and a 12-time All-Star. Russell was also voted to the 50th Anniversary All-NBA Team, Bill Russell’s uniform number (#6) has been retired by the Celtics and he was inducted into both the NBA and the College Halls Of Fame. All of Bill’s Records and Awards are too numerous to list here, but these are just a few of the many.

  1. Bill Russell played for the Boston Celtics and was the “backbone” of the Celtics, as far as I’m concerned. He was in a special class of nothing but the BEST! He seldom missed a free throw and was the man to “go to” for a sure score, especially when time was running out and the Celtics needed a “sure” bucket!
